Welsh names for places in England.

  In wonder why there are so many with Welsh names. Some of them look great, but pronouncing them is another matter. I always have trouble with the double 'll' sound.

    It seems that most of the English towns and cities with official Welsh names are either in the Marchers or were Roman settlements; that's why I was hoping Doncaster might be on the list.

  Parts of northern England and southern Scotland were early Welsh/Brythonic speaking areas (some time ago I must add). The Welsh word for Edinburugh is Caeredin (Edin Town or Edin Fort). There are loads of villages in Herefordshire and Shropshire with Welsh names as oppoesed to Welsh versions of present day English names as noted above.

    In Herefordshire at least there are a lot of Welsh names for villages especially in the south of the county - eg Llangarron, Llanwarne, Llandinabo.
    But the 'English' place names are usually just derived from the original Welsh names hence their similarity.
    
    Hereford - Henfordd
    Leominster - Llanlleini
    Ross-on-Wye - Rhosan ar Wy
    
    It's a real shame that people don't appreciate Herefordshire's true heritage.

  You also have:
  Cornwall - Cernyw
  Devon - Dyfnaint
  Somerset - Gwlad-yr-Hav
  These areas were also Brythonic/celtic speaking until the early middle ages and in Cornwall's case the 18th Century.
