An unusual border dispute.

by lee954 @ 03 Mar. 2008 - 10:37:35

Dutch and Belgian cops are arguing over who will lead a murder hunt after a corpse was found on the border.
The dead body of a woman was found in a house which stands on both sides of the Holland-Belgium border in the Baarle-Hertog region.
Belgian prosecutors had begun investigating but Dutch cops say the corpse was in the side of the house over the Dutch border when it was found.
Officials from both forces have now said they may have to find the woman's next of kin before deciding who will investigate her death.

Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau is an interesting place. There are several dozen very small Belgium enclaves within Holland; there are even Dutch enclaves (some no more than a few square yards in area) within these small Belgian enclaves. As the report states, many houses are divided between the two countries. A very confusing place to live.

Hello,

Is Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nassau similar to the Nassau in the Bahamas. Is there any history between the two?

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware Baarle-Nassau is named after the Dutch royal family [Orange-Nassau]. The capital of the Bahamas seems to be from another origin though.
