Sundays

by lee954 @ 30 Jun. 2008 - 09:11:28

Things I do on Sundays, but not during the rest of the week...none of them are religious.

1...I tend not to get shaved; there's no-one around to see me, so why should I bother?

2...Buy [and read] a newspaper: usually the Sunday Times.

3...If I've got the money spare, treat myself to an 'evening special' from my local fish and chip shop...fish, chips, mushy peas and a sausage for £2.90.

Unseasonable weather?

by lee954 @ 27 Jun. 2008 - 08:34:31

I've decided not to wear a coat this morning. It's quite sunny...but there's still a cold wind blowing.

The summer so far this year has been poor, but not quite as bad as last year; this time last year large parts of the borough were under water.

Missing

by lee954 @ 25 Jun. 2008 - 08:46:38

Yesterday I was watching the BBC News Channel and a reporter came on air and said 'baker' every time he should have said 'banker'.

I wonder why he did this? If it was a typo on the autocue, surely he would have realised? Or...maybe he did it to win a bet?

Unlucky For Some

by lee954 @ 25 Jun. 2008 - 08:43:28

I'm using computer number thirteen at the library this morning, and I'm struggling a bit: the mouse doesn't have a scroller wheel and accessing the internet is really slow because of all the junk that's been downloaded onto the hard drive. Computer number 14, next to me just has an error message on the screen, and the terminal I used yesterday just froze after a few minutes and so I've stayed away from it today.

Well, anyway; I can just about cope.

Simple

by lee954 @ 24 Jun. 2008 - 08:39:06

This afternoon I've got an appointment at the jobcentre to see someone to make another appointment with someone I don't want to see. I've then got to go to another office to tell the person I do want to see when the appointment with the person I don't want to see is, and who it is I'll be seeing, so that she can then tell that person what she needs to know.

Simple, isn't it?

The Longest Day

by lee954 @ 21 Jun. 2008 - 09:07:48

June 21st, the longest day of the year; Midsummer's Day, and here in Doncaster it's miserably dark and cold.

On the news this morning I heard two reports about people utilising the long hours of daylight though; a sponsored cycle ride, starting from John o'Groats at dawn and hoping to reach Land's End before nightfall; and the re-establishing of a speedboat race circumnavigating the island of Great Britain.

My Genetic Inheritance

by lee954 @ 19 Jun. 2008 - 08:39:08

From my mum:
dark hair
hazel eyes
a squint
problems with my jaw muscles
varicose veins
loose bowel movements

From my dad:
vigorous hair growth
hay fever
piles
some of my attitudes

The Report

by lee954 @ 18 Jun. 2008 - 09:05:52

Yesterday morning I received my Employment Assessment Report from the Yorkshire and the Humber Work Psychology Service at Sheffield.

Here are the highlights:

'He has a wide range of skills, excellent timekeeping and many qualifications to support the types of employment he is interested in pursuing. Lee's main difficulty in finding employment appears to be his manner of communication (e.g. how it could be misinterpreted by others) and unhelpful thinking styles.'

'It is also apparent that Lee may have been underselling his skills on job applications and thus serves to maintain his situation.'

'...has a good insight into some of the difficulties he has been experiencing.'

'Lee is likely to benefit from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to challenge these thinking biases.'

'He would also benefit from some training around communication skills to help him socialise and communicate better with people.'

'The work preparation scheme or work placements would be very valuable to Lee.'

'Results from the assessment exercises suggest the possible existence of some visual difficulties...words moving about and standing off the page...ocular motility or binocularity...coloured filters...coloured spectacles...'Intuitive Colorimeter.'

A copy of the report has also been sent to the Disabilty Employment Advisor at Doncaster Jobcentre, and I've got an appointment to see her at the beginning of next month.

Found:

by lee954 @ 17 Jun. 2008 - 08:39:02

In among my loose change this morning, a Canadian 25c coin - it's slightly smaller than a 10p.

Mistaken Identity

by lee954 @ 16 Jun. 2008 - 09:12:22

Over the years I've been mistaken for many different people.

Here's the list:

The manager of Doncaster Rovers Football Club
A terrorist
A bank robber
A gangster
A homosexual
A drug dealer
A drug addict
A client of prostitutes
A pimp
A man called 'Ian' - many occasions
A mechanic

Site Problems

by lee954 @ 16 Jun. 2008 - 09:09:23

I was going to post something on Saturday but I couldn't log-in. I was unable to type anything into the text boxes; the cursor just kept flashing.

Another personal list

by lee954 @ 13 Jun. 2008 - 08:43:38

Items I have difficulty in using, or avoiding:

Cigarette lighters: I don't smoke, but they come in handy when camping...I haven't been camping for many years though.

Car door handles and seatbelts: I can't drive.

Packaging on food items and various other products.

Mobile phones: I don't have one.

Remote controls.

Zips/zippers.

Buttons.

Ties: I still can't tie one.

Tablets: They're usually too small; and I have difficulty with the childproof bottles.

Door handles: They keep ripping off my trouser/coat pockets.

Car wing mirrors: There's never enough room between vehicles in the carpark I have to cross in order to reach town.

Frying pans: I don't use them...I'm scared.

Some Good News

by lee954 @ 11 Jun. 2008 - 08:43:05

My dad had his tests at the hospital yesterday and has been given the all clear; they couldn't find anything wrong with his bowel.

The doctor suggested that the bleeding and diarrhoea were probably caused by ruptured piles and a bit of food poisoning.

Two Facts

by lee954 @ 09 Jun. 2008 - 09:10:25

England haven't qualified for Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

Two English teams, both with a majority of foreign players, were in the European Cup Final.

I'm sure that both these events are linked.

I wonder what languages these are meant to be?

by lee954 @ 07 Jun. 2008 - 09:13:53

Programmes I've noticed in this morning's TV schedules:

Trollz
Cubeez
Goalissimo
Yu-Gi-Oh
SamSam

There's no surprise that children seem to be having problems with English these days.

You couldn't make it up.

by lee954 @ 05 Jun. 2008 - 08:44:01

Two of this morning's news headlines:

Motorcyclists are protesting about the high cost of petrol by riding in convoy down a motorway.

Soldiers, who are paid less than traffic wardens, can't afford to feed themselves properly.

Interesting Juxtaposition

by lee954 @ 04 Jun. 2008 - 08:42:55

There's a spectacular water feature just outside Sheffield Railway Station; it's not working though at the moment.

It was raining yesterday and the sight of a water feature turned off when it's raining is rather sad and ironic, yet in its own way deeply profound.

Sheffield City Centre

by lee954 @ 03 Jun. 2008 - 13:31:26

I've been at Sheffield Jobcentre again; only for an hour today though.

These last two days I've been walking through parts of the city where I've not been for many years, and noticed all the re-development work that's happening. Thirty years ago there were still areas quite near to the city centre that were still World War II bombsites.

Sheffield Jobcentre

by lee954 @ 02 Jun. 2008 - 16:53:45

I've just returned from visiting Sheffield Jobcentre where I went for psychometric testing and psychological assessment. I can't say it was a barrel of laughs, but it was quite interesting. The areas covered were communication and understanding skills, physical dexterity, memory tests, pattern recognition and logical thinking. I need to go back tomorrow for more tests and the results, but it seems like they've already discovered that I'm colour blind.
