From the 11-14 September English Heritage is allowing free admission to many of its properties. This year there are several local venues that I'll suggest to my brother that we go and visit.
Conisbrough Castle
The Mansion House, Doncaster
The gardens at Brodsworth Hall

Yes: we're due some good weather this summer.
If you haven't been to Conisborough Castle my opinion is that you are in for a terrible disappointment as the interior is disneyfied to the extreme. I visited it many years ago when it was a floorless ruin and was very impressed, but it stands out among recent visits as exactly what not to do. I'm by no means against restoration, reproduction furniture etc. (well done they can be brilliant as I have mentioned frequently on my blog) but in my opinion what they have done to poor Consiborough is a disater.
Brodsworth gardens are delightful, and the house is interesting.
I've never been to the Mansion House.
