I went with my brother to visit the gardens at Brodsworth Hall yesterday - it was free admission as part of English Heritage's Open Weekend.
We've never been before, but really enjoyed ourselves for about ninety minutes; the highlight being the formal border consisting of 1920s varieties of many popular garden plants.
We also saw something that we'd not seen before - people playing croquet on the lawns.

Pro Never been in the house itself, but wandered into the gardens one evening to find the hedges populated by fairies and a telephone with a lobster for a receiver on one of the benches. The words 'acid flashback' immediately came to mind, though it turned out that it was just a dress-rehearsal for an open-air production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" !
People playing croquet on lawns is popular over here. x
I am told that for all its genteel image it is one of the most vicious games in the world. I've only played the once and, though my friend had played before, we were both working from the rule book; rather surprisingly, I won, so I think my friend can't have been concentrating as I never win anything to do with sport. (Maybe the occasional sports round in a quiz.)
