When I was in the fish and chip shop last night I noticed that, although we say 'salt and vinegar', everyone put vinegar on their chips first.

I can see the logic in sprinkling on the vinegar first; but 'vinegar and salt' would be how we'd say it...I'll ask Antlady which way round they say it in German.

Erm, we don't use vinegar on our chips here. It's just never caught on, but they do sell crisps with salt and vinegar!

Chips here are usually served with either ketchup or mayonnaise (yes, REALLY!) - or both. They're automatically salted so you don't have to mention salt, except if you DON'T want any. But that wouldn't taste good, would it?
Chips are referred to by their French/Belgian name, Pommes frites, but many people just shorten that to "Pommes" only. Oh, and then they do pronounce the "e" and the "s" which are silent in French, of course. Pronounced as spelled.
With ketchup it's: Pommes mit Ketchup (English pronunciation, presumably from the Americans after the war)
With mayonnaise: Pommes mit Mayo (yep, we Germans are lazy)
With both: Pommes rot-weiß (red-white)
In my (long) answer I stuck to your example with chips, but I think you also asked about the logical order of words and the following actions.
I'm convinced we have this illogic order too, but for the sake of me I can't think of any example right now. Will let you know when I notice it

Speaking of which, do you like mushy peas? I do. Had them when I was last in the UK.

Yes, I absolutely love mushy peas...which, by the way, aren't the same as processed peas.

So I understand. They are marrow fat peas are they not?

I think so; although marrow fat peas are also sold in tins. I'm not that keen of either though - I think they're a bit dry...unlike mushy peas.

There's a good reason for that.

If you put the salt on first, any vinegar you add will wash the salt off, whereas if you add vinegar first, more salt adheres to the moistened food. Saying "salt and vinegar" is just simple alphabetical ordering.
