It's been reported on the news that a woman has been trampled to death by a herd of cows while she was taking her dogs for a walk.
I once had a scary experience with cows when I was walking with friends in the Peak District and we were cornered in a field by about a dozen of them and had to hastily scramble over a dry stone wall, partially demolishing it in the process.

They're not aggressive; they don't charge or stampede - it's just that when you're in a confined space [a walled field] if they all decide just to take a friendly interest in you it can be threatening...after all, they are quite large.
In the news report I mentioned the woman was walking her dogs and they might have spooked the cows.

The dogs could have done it that is for sure. A walled area would make them a little threatening I would think
I wonder if they were cows or bullocks? In my experience bullocks are much more likely to get spooked than cows.

Certainly in my case there weren't any bulls or even bullocks; I've always assumed it was illegal to keep them in a field which a public footpath crosses.

A few weeks ago me and a friend were walking near Brimham Rocks and we went through a field with a lot of cows and calves in it. The cows were obviously not happy with our presence and started walking towards us, even though we were trying to keep out of their way next to the edge of the field. Feeling more and more threatened, we decided to make a dash for it over the stile into the next field. When we turned round a few of them were facing us off from the other side of the wall, by dropping their heads close to the ground and scraping the ground with their hooves. Definitely not friendly.

Pro Ah, but ANY animal will protect their offspring. Never ever go near an animal when they have their babies around, unless the animal knows you.
Though I'm pretty sure those cows weren't scraping the ground with their hooves!
