Recently I was reading a book about the origins of English surnames. Many surnames are actually geographical names, some of which are based on Old English Christian names, and I was reminded that most Anglo-Saxon male names ended with the letter 'a' - unlike modern usage where the letter at the end of a name usually sigfnifies that it's female.
